15 July - Government Initiated Violence Gets Out of Control - Where were the police?
Government security forces initiated a conflict at a peaceful CNRP demonstration to "Free the Freedom Park" and restore their constitutional right to freedom of assembly. Before the demonstration began, the large number of non-police security forces and the absence of the legitimate police seemed a harbinger of the violence to follow. Unlike in the past, some demonstrators did not submit to violence by the security forces and responded with violence. Some security force members were inexcusably beaten severely. Police fired a tear gas canister from behind the razor wire at the site of the initial violence and the crowd moved back. Otherwise, police stood by and watched from behind the razor wire barricades but made no effort to protect anyone or to maintain order. Deputy Governor Sok Pen Vuth, who in the past directed the security forces in attacking demonstrators, was on hand again.
